Paving installation advice

4147ca3af8bf81f64b5d738c371bfecb_MThese are very basic yet essential points on the installation of SmartStone cobbles and flagstones.

Please read these 11 simple points and be aware of what an installer should or should not do when installing your SmartStone paving.

1. Under no circumstances do we recommend plastic sheeting to be installed beneath any paving.

Weeds do not grow from beneath paving. They grow from seeds that enter the paving from the top, via bird droppings, the wind etc. Plastic sheeting underneath paving creates serious structural and other problems.

2. The sub base or earth beneath the paving should be very well compacted.

We recommend the use of a mechanical roller for this purpose and not merely a plate compactor. We know that this does not happen in reality. However when the installation is at a new house where there’s been a lot of digging etc. you must insist that soil compaction is done by a roller like a Bomag 90.

3. Prior to starting, the installer should discuss with you the lines and directions in which the pavers will be packed and possible laying patterns.

Make sure you find it aesthetically pleasing and practical.

4. Ensure the contractor allows for levels and water runoff.

Ask about drainage plans and look at the surrounding natural slopes.

5. The base of flagstones and tiles should be wet before they are seated.

Dry pavers will absorb the moisture in the bedding material causing it to dry out too quickly.

6. Grouting must be done as follows:

  1. The grouting of SmartStone cobbles should be done with wet slurry and not dry cement sprayed with water.
  2. Grouting of flagstones should also be done with SmartStone approved grouting. (Details available from your SmartStone branch.)
    1. The grouting of flagstones should be “pointed”.
    2. Tiles and flagstones should be moist when grouted.
    3. Plaster key should be added to the grouting mix.
    4. Flagstones should be covered with plastic sheets for 4 – 5 days after installation, in order to avoid grouting drying too quickly. If grouting dries too quickly it will crack after a year or two of installation.

7. Ensure grouting and cement is washed off immediately to avoid cement staining.

A hand sponge should be used for this purpose and not brooms etc.

8. The contractor should work in sections.

If the contractor tries to work over too big an area, it could result in complete site failure. All work should therefore be done systematically, in small sections and completed per section, before moving on to the following phase of installation.

9. SmartStone products should not be dumped and transported in wheelbarrows like normal bricks.

The product will get damaged. If contractors use wheelbarrows they could be lined with blankets. Most importantly SmartStone is made by hand and should also be packed and unpacked by hand.

10.  Do not drive on a new SmartStone driveway for seven days or walk on any SmartStone paving for five days after installation.

11. Your paving should be allowed to cure thoroughly before sealing. We recommend you wait 6 months before sealing.
