Common paving installation problems

Most paving installation problems have a snowball effect where one problem will lead to another, which might cause yet another problem, which will ultimately result in complete, irreparable failure of a paved area.

Instead of falling victim to a poor installation, we highly recommend taking a look at  these questions that one should ask before hiring a contractor. We hope it helps!

Paving problems are normally caused by inferior earthworks. When a paving sites sub base has failed due to incorrect earthworks, the result will be disastrous and irreparable.

Inadequate compaction of sub base will cause pavers to sag which could result in water ponding as discussed bunder drainage.

Incorrect drainage will cause ponding and infiltration of the sub base, which might cause the sub base to fail.

Attention To Detail

SmartStone is a beautiful product but the beauty of the overall installation will be lacking if an installer doesn’t have the skill required to pay attention to detail.

Cement Staining

Cement grouting can cause permanent stains on paving when the grouting is not correctly cleaned off the pavers.

Careful Handling

Careful handling

Careless and indiscriminate handling of SmartStone’s cobbles and flagstones will cause chipping and breaking. SmartStone pavers are very different to bricks and cannot be handled in the same conventional manner.

Grouting Failures

Grouting Failures

Cement grouting failures on flagstone installations are extremely common. There are alternatives.

Straight Lines

Crooked lines between pavers are common when installers don’t pay attention to detail.

Correct Sealing

A sealant should not be applied for at least 6 months after installation as it will trap efflorescence under the surface which will ruin the beauty of the installation.
